    Hike Canyonlands National Park

    #40144

Once we’ve all met in Grand Junction, we’ll begin our journey with a drive to our first national park of this trip – Canyonlands! Canyonlands National Park is known for its dramatic desert landscape carved by the Colorado River, a wilderness of countless canyons and fantastically formed buttes. We’ll explore Utah’s largest national park with a few short hikes, eyeing the skyward-jutting spires and needles, deep craters, and blue-hued mesas that dot the landscape.

The Grant View Point trail is a popular choice a great chance to see some wildlife. After we’ve exhausted ourselves we’ll head to our accommodation for the night and our base camp for exploration of Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park.
Accommodation: Canyonlands Inn or Greenwell Inn
    Meals:
    Lunch, Dinner

    Hiking: 3-4 miles (5-6 kilometers)

  • Day 2

    Hike Moab

    #40145

After a hearty breakfast we’ll depart from Moab to a trail that is a maze of soaring fins, pinnacles, minarets, gargoyles, spires, and strangely shaped rock formations. Behold views of Fisher Towers, which are world-renowned for their exciting rock-climbing routes and a favorite subject of photographers for years.

After this beautiful hike, settle in for lunch along the river. In the afternoon, beat the peak of the heat with a bit of downtime to enjoy some downtime to relax by the pool, explore downtown Moab, or grab a drink at a local brewery. Meet back up for dinner with your fellow travelers at one of our favorite restaurants in town.
Accommodation: Canyonlands Inn or Greenwell Inn
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Hiking: 3 miles (5 kilometers)

  • Day 3

    Hike Arches National Park

    #40146

It’s an early start to the morning today to beat the crowds and the heat at Arches National Park. The park has over 2,000 natural stone arches, in addition to hundreds of soaring pinnacles, massive fins and giant balanced rocks. We’ll hike to Delicate Arch, a 52-foot-tall (16 m) freestanding natural arch. The trail is a steady uphill climb through dry desert terrain, occasionally passing stunted trees or rock piles providing welcome shade.

We’ll head back the same way and continue on to Devil’s Garden to explore more of the park by foot. Encounter the famous Landscape Arch, along with a few of our guides’ favorite arches in the area. After lunch, we’ll drive to Capitol Reef National Park, where we’ll spend the night at the Capitol Reef Resort, located on the doorstep of the park, and enjoy dinner in a quaint nearby town.
    Accommodation: Capitol Reef Resort
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Hiking: 5 miles (8 kilometers)

  • Day 4

    Hike Capitol Reef National Park

    #40147

Capitol Reef National Park surrounds a long wrinkle in the earth known as the Waterpocket Fold, with layers of golden sandstone, canyons and striking rock formations. We'll head out to hike the Cassidy Arch trail after breakfast; Named after the famous Butch Cassidy, Cassidy Arch is located in the central portion of Capitol Reef National Park, and although the climb is steep, it's worth the visit as the arch is large and spectacularly photogenic at almost any angle!

After lunch we’ll have time to explore more of the Capitol Reef National Park or relax at the Capitol Reef Resort, the choice is yours! We'll enjoy indulgent room accommodations alongside stunning views of the red rock cliffs, it's a unique and comfortable destination, along with fine amenities, to recharge for our day tomorrow!

  • Day 5

Hike Capitol Reef National Park & explore Anasazi State Park

    #40148

This morning we’ll head out for another hike through the beautiful Cohab Canyon. Native Americans once called this colorful landscape of tilted buttes, jumbled rocks and sedimentary canyons the Land of the Sleeping Rainbow. The banded orange and yellow walls do in fact resemble pastel-striped eggs and the holes and pockets texture the surface create a sandstone honeycomb fortified in rock.

After lunch we’ll drive through to Bryce Canyon National Park, a sprawling reserve in southern Utah, known for its crimson-colored hoodoos, which are spire-shaped rock formations. On our way we’ll stop off at Anasazi State Park, where the ruins of an ancient Native American village are sheltered.
    Accommodation: Bryce Canyon Grand
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Hiking: 2 miles (3.2 kilometers)

  • Day 6

    Hike Bryce Canyon National Park

    #40149

After a hearty breakfast we’ll embark on a hike through the magical hoodoo rock formations of Bryce’s Queens Garden trail. The trail drops down into the canyon and we’ll wander through natural sculpted rock gardens of brilliantly colored spires, cliffs, and natural amphitheaters with the trail looping up with the Peek-a-boo Trail, creating a figure-8, passing by the Wall of Windows, the Hindu temples finishing with a walk up the famous Wall Street with its switchbacks that leads back to the rim. After a full of day of hiking enjoy a bit of rest before dinner at the hotel.
    Accommodation: Bryce Canyon Grand
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hiking: Up to 8 miles (13 kilometers)

  • Day 7

Hike Bryce Canyon National Park & Zion National Park

    #40150

We’ll start the day with a hike offering unforgettable views of hoodoo scenery along the Bird’s Eye Trail, this is a short trail that leads past beautiful and unusual rock formations, providing close-up views. After our morning hike, we’ll drive to Zion National Park, winding through the magnificent canyon walls and towering cliffs that make up this majestic park.

We’ll then head out on a hike in Zion National Park which showcases dramatic panoramas of towering canyon walls, picturesque views of the Virgin River, and lushly-vegetated trails. Later we’ll check into our accommodation for the next two nights, Springhill Suites, located only one mile from the park's entrance. The evening is then yours to explore and enjoy on your own.
    Accommodation: Springhill Suites

Rappel down water-carved rocks in a sandstone slot canyon with professionals who will guide you every step of the way. You'll be fully equipped and supported as you jump into this adrenaline-inducing activity, perfect for beginners.

"We booked this excursion wanting to see and hike this extraordinary country which it did. However the range of activities we engaged in, snorkelling, mountain biking, Sandboarding, tube rafting added an exciting dimension and perspective by actually experiencing what NZ has to offer. Accommodations were excellent and above expectation; snacks, and sunscreen always available. Definitely recommend!

"This trip provided a variety of hikes through beautiful rain forests, beaches and mountains. We were always given a choice between an easier hike and a more strenuous hike. I would highly recommend the Heli-Hike on Franz Josef glacier. It was a unique and very memorable experience. Mel and Kayla were excellent guides for this trip. Most of the meals were prepared and cooked by Mel and Kayla and they provided a variety of delicious meals. They also made accommodations for those with dietary restrictions. Mel provided a sarcastic wit and was very knowledgeable with answering questions. She was also an amazing driver through some very windy roads with a bus and attached trailer to navigate. Mel and Kayla provided a fun, safe, delicious and adventurous trip. I highly recommend this trip for anyone looking to hike, kayak and wine taste in an absolutely beautiful country.

"Certainly! Here's a revised version:

Greg and Kim are an exceptional team, and our experience with them was truly memorable. Kim's culinary skills created an array of delightful dishes that had us savoring every bite. From appetizers to main courses, each plate was a testament to her culinary expertise, leaving a lasting impression.

On the other hand, Greg's knowledge of New Zealand and its diverse birdlife brought a unique and engaging element to our stay. His passion for the subject was evident in the captivating stories he shared, turning casual conversations into fascinating insights about the country's avian wonders.

What made this duo stand out was their seamless collaboration. Kim's dishes perfectly complemented the natural beauty of New Zealand that Greg so passionately described. The combination of exquisite cuisine and enriching discussions created an immersive experience that exceeded our expectations.

Greg and Kim's genuine warmth and expertise made our stay not just a vacation but an exploration of taste and nature. Whether through a mouthwatering meal crafted by Kim or an intriguing bird-related anecdote shared by Greg, their unique blend of talents turned our time into a delightful, well-rounded experience.

"I've been impressed with the customer service at Active Adventures from the very beginning- from the basics of setting up a trip to the crazy
tour shifting in March 2020 to changing our 2023 trip to 2024. And our just completed Ultimate North Island Adventure continued to surpass all
that. Our guides, Braden and Katie, were exceptional in every way, going the extra mile to make our trip special and accommodating the varying abilities and desires of the group. There was always a good alternative if you weren't up to the main activity, and their "home town" knowledge added a special personal touch to the tour. They looked out for me and my bum knee, always making sure that things were OK, and finding ways of making it work. And I won't even start on the wonderful food- absolutely amazing, especially the guide prepared spreads with all the NZ specialties! The highest kudos and deepest thanks for their tireless efforts.

"I'm not usually a "tour" type of traveler. I joined the North Island Adventure trip because I was traveling solo through NZ and thought Active Adventures would help get me to places I couldn't get myself. Over the ten days, there was not a moment I questioned my choice. Our guides -- Katie and Branden -- were all about generosity of spirit, pride, and knowledge about the country they lovingly call home. Every activity, accommodation, and meal was seamlessly organized and full of joy -- and in some cases mischievous surprises. There was even laughter on the long bus rides. What I really appreciated the most about the trip was the flexibility and thoughtfulness. I never felt like the "extra" as a single traveler and I, or any other of my fellow trip mates, wanted to change up our day or try something different, the answer was always "yes". Should you join an Active Adventure trip? My answer will always be "yes"!

Doing privately would / could have been challenging and potentially frustrating. There are a lot of complexities in Patagonia and the Active team absolutely handled that very well.

What should I bring with me on the first day?

When you speak with your guides the night before your trip, they will give you a detailed description of what to bring with you on Day 1. Typically, this includes a day pack with your rain jacket, sunglasses, hat, camera, etc. Anything you want easy access to during the day should go in your day pack as the rest of your luggage will go in the locked cargo trailer pulled behind the van. Your guides will provide you with a water bottle on the first morning of your trip and will always have water available for refills. There will be snacks available at all times in the van. Your guides will also have bug spray and sunscreen accessible for you to use.

Will I have contact with my guides before the trip starts?

Your guides will call your cell phone the night before your trip begins to touch base on the first day’s plan. If they don’t get through to you, they will leave a voicemail on your cell phone with all the details you need to plan for your first morning.

What are your recommended guide gratuity guidelines?

You will have 2-3 guides on your Austin Adventure (depending on group size). We recommend USD$20 per day, per guest, per guide. Typically, gratuities are offered by check or cash in local currency on the final morning of the trip and can either be given to each guide individually or to one guide to be equally distributed. Most of our guides these days also accept gratuities via Venmo (please note this app does not work in Canada). All dining, housekeeping and activity tips are included in your trip price.

How do rooming arrangements work?

Trip prices are based on shared arrangements (typically two guests per room), unless otherwise stated. For solo travelers, we’ll pair you with another person of the same gender to share rooms and if there’s no one suitable to share with, there’s no forced single supplement. However, if you specifically request your own rooms, you can opt to pay the single supplement. Solo travelers who book within 120 days of departure, where there are no other solo travelers willing to share, will be required to pay the single supplement.

For Family Vacation bookings, families consisting of four guests traveling with children aged 17 and under will be automatically assigned one shared room. However, the following alternative rooming allocations are available:

  • Families consisting of four guests with all children aged 13 and above are welcome to opt for additional rooms as per advertised double occupancy adult rates.
  • Families consisting of four guests with at least one child aged 12 and under are automatically assigned a shared room. However, families can opt to pay the adult rates for all guests in their family to have an additional room.
  • The same principles apply for families consisting of more than four guests.

Rooming preferences are subject to availability and must be communicated in writing at time of booking. Automatic assignments as per this policy will be applied in the absence of any specification provided by guests. Any request for additional rooms during trips will be at guests’ own expense and subject to rates made available by the accommodation provider at the time. All minors (guests aged 17 and under) must be accompanied by at least one adult.
